Use an old jigsaw puzzle to make reversible Lion and Lamb display for the March adage "March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb."
Jigsaw puzzle lions and lambs are a fun way to recycle old jigsaw puzzles. Next time you clean out the game closet, save the old puzzles. Instead of throwing them away or donating them to the thrift store, add them to your children’s craft supplies because nothing can beat free craft supplies. In addition to providing you with the opportunity to be frugal, repurposing something that you would otherwise throw away is a gratifying experience. By letting your children craft with what you would otherwise throw away, you teach them how to recycle and be frugal.
Supplies
- jigsaw puzzle
- old CD
- acrylic paints (white and shades of orange and yellow)
- adhesive
- lion head and lamb head template (available below)
- drill
- ribbon
- markers or crayons
Instructions
- Prepare all the CDs by drilling a hole through them to use for a hanger (this step must be done by an adult).
- Paint half your puzzle pieces white and the other half in shades of yellow and orange (you will want a minimum of a hundred puzzle pieces for each face).
- Glue the white puzzle pieces to one side of the CD. Take care to avoid covering up the hanging hole. Let the pieces dry.
- While the puzzle pieces are drying, cut out the lion and lamb heads. Draw the face details on both animals.
- Glue the orange and yellow puzzle pieces on the opposite side of the CD. Again, remember to avoid gluing any puzzle pieces over the hanging hole. Allow the glue to dry.
- Glue the lamb’s head to the white puzzle pieces and glue the lion’s head to the yellow puzzle pieces.
- Run the ribbon through the hanging hole and tie.
Ideas and Suggestions
- If you do not have a drill or would rather not drill through the CD, consider using two CDs. Decorate one CD as the lamb and decorate the other CD as the lion. Make a loop out of thread or ribbon and glue the tails onto the back of one CD, allowing the loop to hang beyond the edge of the CD. Then glue the wrong side of the two CDs together.
- The lion and lambs heads could be used as a craft for a Sunday School or Vacation Bible School lesson on the popular saying that "The lamb will lay down with the lion." The lion and lamb motif that is popular in Christianity is based on two verses in Isaiah: Isaiah 65:25 and Isaiah 11:6. However, the Bible does not actually use the exact phrase.
