Use buttons and a proverb to tell Mom how special she is on Mother's Day or any other day.

Moms are some of the most important people in the world. They keep things together when no one else can. The bandage cuts and referee arguments. They soothe fevers and calm tempers. They do the laundry and mend clothes. Why not make this simple placard letting your Mom know what she means to you. The proverb, “Mother’s are like buttons they hold things together,” will let her know that you recognize how important she is in your life.

Supplies

  • Styrofoam that is thicker than your straight pins
  • Fat quarter of fabric
  • Buttons
  • Pearlized straight pins
  • Wool felt, fulled wool, or craft felt
  • Printer fabric
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

  1. Cut your Styrofoam into a 10-inch square.
  2. Wrap the fabric around the Styrofoam use the hot glue to glue the fabric to the back of the placard.
  3. Make a heart pattern out of paper. Make sure it fits the face of the placard. Use the pattern to cut a heart out of the wool felt.
  4. In your favorite computer program, type the text “Mothers are like buttons they hold things together.” Print it out on your printer fabric, following the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure to print it out far enough away from the margins that you will have room to cut it out into a heart shape.
  5. Make a smaller heart pattern out of paper. Use it to frame the text and cut a heart out of the printer fabric.
  6. If you wish, sew the second heart to the middle of the first heart. If you rather not, it can be fixed to the front of the placard with buttons and pins at the same time you fix the large heart to the placard.
  7. Lay the felt heart on the placard. Use buttons and pins to tack it to the front of the placard. Do this by placing the buttons on the face of the placard and sticking pins through the buttonholes into the Styrofoam to hold the buttons and fabric in place.
  8. Use more pins to tack a button frame all the way around the outside of the placard.
  9. If you wish, glue a piece of felt to the back of the placard for a neater appearance.

Ideas and Suggestions

  • You may glue the heart down before pinning it, if you want the placard to be more secure.
  • Remember when you cluster your buttons that odd numbered groupings are more visually appealing than even numbered groupings.
  • If you had a special grandma who helped you through the tough times, modify the quote for her.
